Processing

Our working group deals with the development of manufacturing processes for fibres, nonwovens and films based on native polymers from renewable vegetable raw materials. Therefor diverse laboratory extruders, a pilot-scale spinning unit for spinning of viscose, carbamate, and Lyocell fibres, a blown film production unit as well as equipment for the development of nonwovens are available.

In recent years emphasis of our work was put on the development of fibres and fleeces based on the eco-friendly Lyocell and carbamate processes, respectively. Spinning solutions with different dissolving pulps prepared according to the Lyocell process are suitable for the fleece formation using the meltblown procedure. Cellulose carbamate solutions in caustic soda were processed according to the spunlaid process. We could prove that these processes are an interesting alternative for a high efficient fleece manufacturing.

For years the optimisation of the viscose process has been a developing emphasis and also in future it will be an emphasis. This is true for the used raw materials and process parameter as well as for the creation of new products.

The blown film production unit started up in 2000 and can operate with NMMO spinning solution as well as with viscose.

Because of the close cooperation with the divisions of structure characterisation and material testing we are able to detect structure-property relationships in the different phases of development and based on these results to optimise the process parameters.
